Sleeping Sorrows is a deeply intimate portrait of pain carried quietly. A sleeping figure rests above curling waves while blue tears continue to fall, suggesting that sorrow does not disappear when consciousness closes its eyes. Sometimes the things we suppress during the day simply follow us into our dreams.

Some sorrows sleep with us.

Sleeping Sorrows captures the strange persistence of pain that remains after the noise of the day has gone quiet.

The figure appears asleep, her enormous form curled into itself as if seeking protection. Her expression is peaceful at first glance, yet brilliant blue tears continue to escape from beneath her closed eyes. They collect, fall, and descend toward the restless forms below.

She may be sleeping.

Her sorrow is not.

The warm oranges, ochres, browns, and golds of the figure create an almost comforting physical presence, while the deep blue tears cut sharply through that warmth. Beneath her, curling forms resemble waves, memories, dreams, or emotions that refuse to become still.

Above and around her, isolated droplets descend through dark space. The painting creates the feeling that grief has escaped the boundaries of the body and become part of the surrounding world.

There are forms of sadness we can explain, and others we simply carry.

We learn to work around them. We laugh. We talk. We continue with our lives. Eventually we may even convince ourselves that they have disappeared.

Then the world becomes quiet.

Sleeping Sorrows explores that private territory, the place where vulnerability survives after our defenses have gone to sleep.

Yet the work is not entirely about despair. Sleep is also restoration. Tears release what the body can no longer contain. The same darkness that exposes sorrow can become the place where healing quietly begins.

Created by Michael J. Thomas for Khaos Art Studios, Sleeping Sorrows is an emotionally charged contemporary work about grief, vulnerability, memory, and the pain we carry when no one else is watching.
