Somewhere Beyond reduces the world to three essential elements: water, light, and a solitary vessel.
An immense field of blue dominates the composition. Near the horizon, a small dark boat sits almost impossibly alone, dwarfed by the water beneath it and the atmosphere surrounding it. In the distance, a concentrated glow of yellow breaks through the cooler blues and grays.
The destination is never revealed.
That uncertainty is central to the painting. The light may represent home, hope, salvation, understanding, or simply another horizon. The boat has no visible harbor and no obvious point of departure. It exists somewhere between where it has been and wherever it is going.
Its smallness against the surrounding expanse gives the painting its sense of solitude, but not necessarily loneliness. There is also persistence in the image. Against an enormous and unknowable world, something continues forward.
Somewhere Beyond is about the strange condition of moving toward something we cannot yet see clearly, guided only by the belief that there is something worth reaching on the other side.
