The Price of the Light presents a beautiful but unsettling contradiction.
A mermaid rises through the depths toward a brilliant light at the surface. She points toward it as if she has discovered something extraordinary, yet in her other hand she carries a large fishing hook attached to a line leading toward the world above.
She can see both.
The promise and the danger.
Below her, another figure remains among the rocks, while the ascending mermaid continues toward the light despite knowing that something is attached to it.
The painting becomes a meditation on temptation and awareness. Human beings are often drawn toward things we know carry a price: ambition, love, wealth, pleasure, power, knowledge, faith, or simply the possibility of becoming something more.
Sometimes the danger is hidden.
Sometimes we see the hook and reach for the light anyway.
The Price of the Light asks whether recognizing the cost of our desires actually protects us from them, or whether some lights are powerful enough that we willingly accept the hook.
