Blind Faith is a deliberately provocative examination of patriotism, political allegiance, religious identity, and power in contemporary America.
A woman crowned in imagery reminiscent of American liberty has her eyes covered by the American flag. Hidden among its familiar stars is a Star of David, intentionally disrupting the symbolism and introducing another layer of faith, identity, and allegiance.
The work speaks to contemporary debate surrounding the relationship between the United States and Israel, including questions about lobbying, political influence, foreign policy, and the degree to which American support for an ally reflects national interests, political pressure, ideology, or genuine conviction.
But Blind Faith reaches beyond any single political argument.
When does patriotism become unquestioning loyalty? When does faith become certainty? When does alliance become allegiance? And are we willing to examine the institutions, nations, religions, and political movements we support with the same skepticism we apply to those we oppose?
The American flag becomes both symbol and blindfold, leaving the viewer with the painting's central question:
Are we certain we can still see clearly through the things we believe?
